Essential Oil Uses and Benefits

Essential 7 Kit: Many of you have expressed an interest in learning more and more about how to use Essential Oils in every day use.  I am very excited to share with you ways in which to do so.
This issue will focus on the “Essential 7” Kit.  It contains 3 single oils: Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, and 4 blends: Joy, PanAway, Peace & Calming, and Purification.

This is a great starter kit for anyone interested in Essential Oils and Young Living products. Personally, I feel you get a lot of “bang for your buck” and it’s a great way to sample a variety of oils.

Lavender is considered the “Swiss Army Knife” of all the oils, being the most versatile oil. Great for burns, sunburn, skin irritations- ideal for skin care, rashes, cuts, bruises, allergies, headaches, herpes, and muscles soreness.  Considered antitumoral, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, calming to the Central Nervous System-can be used for depression.  As you can see, the list seems endless.  When in doubt, use Lavender.  My daily Lavender ritual: After showering, I apply 1-2 drops into hands, rub together and pat on face; 2 drops to hands, rub together and pat on breasts (antitumoral).  Can be used as a deodorant.  Need a lift?  Apply 1 drop to hands, rub together, cup and breathe deeply for 1 minute. Will lift your spirits and clear your sinuses too!

Lemon has antiseptic, disinfectant, antibacterial, antiviral-like properties.  Great for digestive problems, sore throats, herpes, warts, shingles, improves memory, microcirculation, lymphatic and immune function. Add a drop or two in your glass/bottle of water and drink.  Diffuse or add 10-12 drops to a spray bottle.  Great for cleaning and wiping up, refreshes the air too!

Peppermint supports digestion, expels worms, pain-relieving, anti-infectious, anti-fungal, antibacterial.  Can heighten or restore sense of taste, improves memory and concentration, reduces fevers, headaches, respiratory infections, stimulates the gallbladder.  Mix in a spray bottle with Lavender and water, or mix both in unscented massage oil creating a muscle liniment, heavenly!  Try licking a fraction of a drop of Peppermint.  WoW, what an incredible breath refresher.

Joy is an exotic blend, uplifting, bringing joy to the heart, inspiring romance, helps with overcoming grief, depression and despair.  Place on heart chakra, behind ears, wrists.

PanAway helps relieve pain and inflammation, increases circulation.  Beneficial for muscle, bone and joint discomfort.  Good for general aches and pains.

Peace & Calming is specifically designed for diffusing.  Promotes relaxation.  Massage on bottom of feet and shoulders to promote a good night’s sleep.

Purification is an antiseptic blend for diffusing to purify, cleanse the air, neutralize mildew, cigarette smoke & unpleasant odors.  Add a few drops to your washing machine, or add 10 drops to a spray bottle and use for cleaning.  Neutralizes the poison of insect bites. *Avoid eye contact with the oils.  In case of accidental eye contact, put 1-2 drops of any pure vegetable oil in the eye, call your Doctor if necessary. Never use water, and never drop oil directly into ear canal.  If skin is sensitive, add any pure carrier oil to the essential oils or to the skin (unscented almond, apricot, or vegetable oil).

**If essential oils get in the eyes, dilute with virgin olive oil, or Young Living's V-6 oil...do not dilute with water, water will only increase the diffusion and the discomfort.

Why Diffuse Essential Oils?
Diffused oils alter the structure of molecules that create odors, rather than just masking them.  They also increase the oxygen availability and produce negative ions.  Many essential oils, such as lemon, purification, citrus fresh, and thieves, are highly antibacterial and are extremely effective for eliminating and destroying airborne germs and bacteria.

A cold-air diffuser is designed to atomize a microfine mist of essential oils into the air, where they can remain suspended for up to several hours.  Unlike aroma lamps or candles, it disperses oils without the heating or burning, which can render the oil therapeutically less beneficial and even create toxic compounds. Burned oils may become carcinogenic.  Research shows that cold air diffusing certain oils may:

  • Reduce bacteria, fungus, mold, and unpleasant odors.
  • Relax the mind and body, relieve tension, and clear the mind.
  • Help with weight management.
  • Improve concentration, alertness, and mental clarity.
  • Stimulate neurotransmitters and the secretion of endorphins.
  • Stimulate growth hormone production and receptivity.
  • Digest petrochemicals on the receptor sites.
  • Improve the secretion of IgA antibodies that fight candida.
  • Improve digestive function.
  • Improve hormonal balance.
  • Relieve headaches.
  • Dispel odors.
Do not mix essential oil blends in a diffuser since this will alter the smell and the therapeutic benefit.  However, single oils may be added to the diffuser, or a single oil added to a blend.

If you don't have a diffuser, you may add several drops of essential oil to a spray bottle, and distilled or filtered water, and shake.  You can use it to mist your entire house, work place, or car.

Always wash diffuser before using a different oil blend with natural soap and water.

To freshen air, the following oils are beneficial:
* lavender, lemon, purification, grapefruit, peppermint, eucalyptus

Start by diffusing oils 15-30 min a day.  As you become accustomed to the oils, and recognize their effects, you may increase the diffusing time to 1-2 hours.  Do not diffuse the blend Thieves or Cinnamon Bark longer than 15 min at a time.  For some respiratory conditions, you may diffuse the oils the entire night.

Humidifier and Vaporizer
Essential oils such as peppermint, lemon, eucalyptus radius, melaleuca alternifolia, and frankincense make ideal additions to humidifiers and vaporizers.*
*some essential oils may damage vaporizers.

Other Easy Ways To Diffuse Oils

  • Add essential oils to cedar chips to make your own potpourri.
  • Put scented cedar chips in closets or drawers.
  • Place any conifer essential oil such as spruce, fir, cedar, or pine onto each log in the fireplace.  This method will disperse an evergreen smell but has no therapeutic benefit since it is heated.
  • Put essential oil on cotton balls and put in car or home air vents.
  • Place a bowl of water with a few drops of oil on a wood stove.
  • Dampen a cloth, apply essential oils to it, place it near the intake duct of your heating and cooling system.

D-Limonene Studies
Excerpted from the Young Living Clinic Newsletter

Experts believe that although your genetics may increase your risk of cancer, it is the environmental factors (diet, pollution, etc.) coupled with your predisposition that will cause cancer.

Environmental factors within our control that contribute to cancer development include overexposure to estrogen, ionizing radiation (X-rays), ultraviolet radiation (Sun), carcinogenic chemicals (formaldehyde and diesel exhaust), tobacco smoke, alcohol and carcinogenic foods (charred meats and nitrates).

Experts believe genetics may increase your risk of cancer, but it is environmental factors coupled with that predisposition that will actually cause cancer.  Lifestyle choices can influence a person's genetic predisposition for cancer.  "It was unequivocally found that animals fed vegetables or fruit experienced either fewer tumors, smaller tumors, fewer metastases, less DNA damage, higher levels of enzymes involved in the detoxification of carcinogens, or other outcomes indicative of lower cancer risk"- Steinmitz et al, 1996

Studies and lengthy reviews support diets rich in fruits, vegetables, fiber can reduce cancer risk. In the 2000 updated version of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the USDA recommends eating plenty of fruits and vegetables because they provide not only vitamins, minerals, and fiber, but other substances experts are labeling "phytochemicals".

A list of phytochemicals is found in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association and it includes familiar headliners such as: indole-3-carbinol, allium compounds, isoflavones, saponins, phytosterols, limonene, lutein, lycopene and flavonoids.

One phytochemical of particular importance in cancer prevention is d-limonene, also known as limonene. It is found in citrus fruits, spices, herbs, and some conifer essential oils.  The oils extracted from the orange and lemon rinds concentrates limonene.

This simple moncyclic monoterpene compound has been found in nearly 100 studies in animals and in humans to prevent cancer, stop the progression of cancer, and destroy and dismantle cancer.  Limonene has been shown to be active against several types of tumors, including mammary, skin, lung, liver and forestomach in rodents, and colon and breast cancer in humans.  Incorporating limonene in your diet is a healthy lifestyle choice that helps promote normal cell life cycles.

Powerful Antioxidant: Ningxia Red Juice, Longevity and Vitality in a Bottle

Ningxia Red Juice Contains:
-Ningxia Wolfberry: The Miracle Superfood. Supports Multiple Biosystems, Ultra-Rich Nutrient Source
-Blueberry: Contains Ultra High Levels of Antioxidants
-Pomegranate: Supports Cardiovascular Health
-Apricot: Revered for Longevity Support
-Raspberry: Contains Ellagic Acid, a DNA protectant

In ancient times, the Chinese people were said to have three cherished tonics for health: Wolfberries, Ginseng, and Ling Tzi. Although many factors can contribute to health and longevity, the people of Ningxia believe the wolfberry is the most important.

According to ancient Chinese texts, wolfberries:
-Nourish the yin
-Support the blood
-Help support the kidneys and liver
-Strengthen the eyes
-Fortify the muscles and bones
-Enhance the "chi" or life force

Antioxidants- The Body's Weapon
Ningxia Wolfberry is rated the highest on the ORAC scale (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), developed by USDA researchers at Tufts University, which rates the Ningxia Wolfberry as the best antioxidant food in the world. There is 49% wolfberry in Young Living's Berry Young Juice. The metabolic energy boost you feel drinking Berry Young Juice is incredible! Your body will love this ancient treasure of health.

Highlights from the Anaheim, California Convention April 2004!

The slogan for the Anaheim Convention was: "What the Hey is BYJ", complete with a promotional button to wear. Mark Schreuder, Director of Product Development, gave us more than an earful of information. It was basically a jaw dropping presentation on Berry Young Juice. He provided clinical research from China to validate the benefits of Berry Young Juice. His bottom line was "Berry Young Juice is your Vitamin in a Berry." It is highest in Calcium, Vitamin C, and Betacarotene over everything. It's the body's best defense against Free Radicals, a powerful immune-supporting agent. A study was done in China to study its effects.

The Wolfberry Leaf was more powerful than green tea in lowering lipids in the blood. The Carotenoid Profile proved to be an orchestra of amazement. Alpha-Carotene was more potent than BetaCarotene. Zeaxanthin was the highest of the Carotenoids, proving to be most beneficial as an ocular protectant strengthening the eyes (no wonder it's in the YL eye creams), and in reducing hepatic fibrosis. Also high in Lutein and Beta-Crytoxanthin. Very nourishing to the Yin, Liver, Eyes, Pancreas and Kidneys. Supports the blood. Fortifies muscles and bones, enhances the "chi" or life force energy. It contains 18 amino acids, 21 trace minerals, 6 essential fatty acids, Vit's B1, B2, B6, and Vit E. It's the most powerful antioxidant juice in the world, more antioxidant power than any other food!

People who consumed wolfberries on a regular basis lived remarkably healthy lives for 100+ years. It is revered by the Ningxia people in China, who for thousands of years have known of its amazing effects. Considered to be a great secret to longevity treating a wide variety of ailments for thousands of years. Gary's desire to bring this remarkable fruit to the United States and the rest of the world has led Young Living to become the first major U.S. importer of Chinese Ningxia wolfberries in 1996.

As of Convention, the price of the BYJ Liter has dropped from $50 down to $40. It is now available in a 2 L. pack for $78, code 3002, and a 4 L. pack for $150, code 3004. Consider it YL's signature product. You can buy the 4 pack, keep one of course, and retail three.
